caitlin + adam: firelight camps wedding, ithaca ny

"This is one of the most special weddings I will ever blog". I feel like I could introduce any of my 2017 weddings with this sentence and it would be completely true every time. Read on for a little slice of what made this weekend-long August camp wedding so exceptional.

The bride, Caitlin, has become my friend after working together on weddings in 2015 and 2016. As a wedding planner (she owns Clover Event Co.), she really could have chosen anyone on the East Coast as her photographer. For me, booking this wedding was one of those "omg I have ARRIVED" moments. It was such an enormous honor!! Not to mention, I got to work alongside some of my favorite vendors, including Shimmer and Spice (hair + make up) and Faye + Renee (florals and event design), and The Haiku Guys (before they were famous!).

This couple is so warm and kind and fun. They're both really down to earth. Their relationship dynamic also reminds me a bit of my own: Caitlin talks a mile a minute, and Adam chimes in here and there, when he can haha! Caitlin zeroes in on the details, Adam keeps the big picture rolling forward. Then they come together to bond over a love of s'mores and haiku.

I was happy to have my pal Dan along to creat his cinematography magic for us, and as soon as he sends that video, I will include it here. Honestly the number of details, the feel of the weekend, there were so many that it was hard to cover in photos. I'm going to drop about a million here in an effort to do it all justice!

Adam and Caitlin kicked off the weekend with a pizza party to welcome their guests to the Finger Lakes. Their guests all had the choice to stay in a luxury canvas tent at Firelight Camps or the more traditional hotel adjacent, La Tourelle. I had the opportunity to stay in both, and I think the tent will win every time.

Guests lined up for specialty pizzas til nightfall, when the fare switched to spirited sips and s'mores around the firepit. We woke up to perfect weather on wedding day: a nice autumnal crisp to the air, but skies like summer.

The couple chose to do a First Look session so they could spend their wedding day together and get their formal photos out of the way. This frees a couple up to enjoy that cocktail hour time, not to mention the family and bridal party will get to enjoy cocktail hour as well. Believe me, there's no better news on wedding day than 'pictures are done, go have fun!'. Letting people enjoy the day is the secret to capturing great candids and lots of movement in your photos. Something you may want to consider for your own wedding day! Also may be helpful to note that I shot this wedding solo, with no second shooter or assistant.

Back to C+A. After we finished formal portraits, the ceremony got underway. Not long before the wedding weekend, the man who introduced Caitlin and Adam, one of their closest friends, Brent, died from complications of a terminal illness. This incredible man was supposed to be their officiant. The couple left a seat open for him, and paid other beautiful tributes to him throughout the night. I have to say, I am prone to tears even at the most standard of weddings. But this one had me weeping to the point that I couldn't see through my viewfinder. Although a loss like Brent's is so tragic and there really is no silver lining in it, it is beautiful to see how his legacy will be carried on by the people who love him. #livelikebrent

The level of detail put into this wedding was mind-blowing. Each element felt personal to the couple, like it was telling their story. I also loved watching Caitlin slip into wedding planner mode here and there, making little adjustments to things and taking little peeks at her planning binder.
